1st stakeholders meeting on participatory management of IL held in Nigeria

In a two part series,

this meeting that hosted key players and actors in the management of IL resources was held on 17th of May 2014 at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

Participants of the meeting included representatives of 7 groups that raise indigenous cattle, sheep, goats, chickens, quails, rabbits and grass cutters; staff and postgraduate students from Obafemi Awolowo University. The meeting drew over 40 participants.

The agenda of the meeting was to familiarise these diverse stakeholders with the objectives and activities of iLINOVA, solicit their involvement and cooperation in the course of project implementation. In particular the aim was to draw attention to the role of Science, Technology & Innovation for the promotion and advancement of the management of IL resources.

The iLINOVA presentation was well received and the stakeholders pledged their full support and involvement in the course of project implementation. Stakeholders shared experiences regarding livestock enterprises they owned and managed, which are essentially low-input units that rely more on biomass and on-farm inputs, how accumulated knowledge and experience in stock husbandry play a key role in the management of their livestock herds, how diversity of stock owned contribute to multiple income sources and diversified livelihood and the critical challenges and constraints that require STI.

The forum successfully created a network of diverse players among owners and raisers of a wide spectrum of IL that agreed to work together with respect to the promotion and advancement of IL through STI. This meeting helped to create a new synergy that could contribute to a more sustainable valuation and utilization of IL resources in Southwestern Nigeria.
