Activities

Project management

Task 1-1:

Project monitoring and evaluation purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to ensure progress and success of all activities of the project and that all partners participate in decision- making which is a key prerequisite for project success. In addition, this task ensures continuous management, early detection of arising difficulties and recommend due adjustment.

Task 1-2:

Annual team meetings purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to familiarise all partners with status quo of the project in each partner HEI in order to identify possibilities for improvement. In addition, it is in these meetings that the steps to be taken within each area of activity will be clarified and working and communication procedures established. Initial actions and tasks will be fixed; mixed teams of specialists in MIL will be formed.

Task 1-3:

Project evaluation and follow up purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to assess progress of the project and its activities with the aim of identifying critical points, problems and need for improvement of procedures or adjustment of the work plan. The task also provides the opportunity to assess project success including lessons learnt, ensuring that the purpose of the project is reached. The task also assists in the assessment of how far it has contributed to overall objectives and improvement of the target groups to ensure sustainable success of the project and proper use of STI in MIL.

Task 1-4:

Gender mainstreaming purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to promote gender mainstreaming as a cross-cutting issue in all project activities.

Situation analysis

The purpose of this task is to perform an analysis on the state of the art STI, IL innovative potential, state and levels of R&D investments and relationships between research and industry. The purpose of this activity is to gather material and knowledge available and analyse its transferability or usefulness for the actors concerned. The aim is to establish status quo of expertise available versus the needs of the universities and identify gaps in knowledge. This assists in the design of concepts and allow for elaboration of topics and materials needed to strengthen STI capacity, research and linkages. In addition, gaps in laboratory requirements of partners are identified.

Stakeholders' fora

The purpose and justification of this task is to familiarise all stakeholders in each country with the objectives and activities of the project and bring together experts from across sectors to discuss needs and measures to improve STI related to MIL and build consensus in policy development implementation. These fora are interdisciplinary and aimed at sharing information, gaining knowledge and devising mechanisms including other ideas into this emerging work.

Summer camps

The purpose and justification of this activity is to provide and deepen scientists, stakeholders and rural communities knowledge and skills in the fields of NRM, PA, animal breeding and genomics, reproductive biotechnologies and project management. This enables them to apply STI in MIL, which entrenches and promotes the culture of STI in all partners HEI. At the same time, there is the opportunity for exchange of experiences and monitor progress of the other project elements.

Research- industry/ civil society linkages

Task 5-1:

Science and technology desks purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to facilitate and institutionalize research industry/ civil society linkages and support conducting of S&T projects and dissemination of the project results. Partnership with civil societies ensures that the work is taken forward in other fora to engage policy makers with respect to diplomacy and advocacy for IL friendly laws. The desks are in Egerton University, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Obafemi Awolowo University. Egerton University is transferring experiences on linkages with the industry to Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Obafemi Awolowo University.

Task 5-2:

Sscience and technology projects purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to demonstrate the use of STI in MIL and to raise awareness among stakeholders and the general public. This enables scientists and students to conduct own small action oriented S&T projects at grass root level. The scientists use this opportunity to deliver action and client oriented extension. The aim is to make poverty alleviation a focus and enhance university research with community outreach.

Task 5-3: Science and technology internship programme purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to provide young scientists and interested students with insight into application of STI in MIL in the industry and with practical work experience to enable them apply and adapt their theoretical knowledge. This facilitates research- industry exchange and diffusion of knowledge and experience. Through this task, the industry is provided with the opportunity to benefit from the expertise of the young scientists and students.

Task 5-4: Science mentorship programme purpose and justification: a strong interest in any area provides unequalled internal motivation and acts as a powerful driving force along the way of self-directed and independent learning. Along that inspired road, an encounter with a mentor can be the beginning of a rewarding lifelong learning experience.

Task 5-5: Mobile application purpose and justification: mobile communication has become the fastest and simplest mode of communication among the rural, including resource compromised persons. The mobile phone systems have shown tremendous growth in the past few years in the target countries. The development of a mobile application is built on this platform and based on the fact that through this system, information on S&T related to MIL and markets spread very fast. In addition, this system can be used to interlink the different stakeholders. The purpose of this task is to establish an easy to use mobile application that inter-links the different stakeholders in the MIL.

Multipurpose centre

The purpose and justification of this activity is the formation of regional centres and networks that have been recommended to strengthen research and other related capacities. It is envisaged that a Livestock Innovation and Business Centre (LIB Centre) is established in Kenya with offices in Malawi and Nigeria to continue building on existing STI capacity and learning and foster innovation and agribusiness development. The LIB Centre hosts the Livestock Innovation and Business Network (LIB Network). The LIB Centre supports the respective African governments to address knowledge gaps and build on existing STI capacity for MIL and learning. The centre also engages with local decision makers on STI and opportunities.

Visibility and knowledge transfer

Task 7-1:

Project brochure, newsletter and further publications purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to inform all interested stakeholders on objectives and content of the project and disseminate results among stakeholders and the interested public. This raises the awareness among stakeholders of the need to utilize S&T in the MIL in Kenya, Malawi and Nigeria.

Task 7-2:

Project website purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to support internal and external project communication and exchange of experiences and to make reports, newsletters, research papers, policy briefs and technologies available to all parties concerned to facilitate overall project coordination.

Task 7-3:

International conference on livestock innovation and S&T exhibition purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to bring together scientist and stakeholders involved in the livestock sector and specifically those involved either directly or indirectly in the MIL. During this conference, different stakeholders are given an opportunity to showcase any innovations, products and services that lead to effective MIL. This brings stakeholders together to initiate new co-operations and further adoption of the concepts thereby ensuring program sustainability and also ensure that the work is extended to benefit wider audience.

Task 7-4:

Symposia for multiplication of project results purpose and justification: the purpose of this task is to facilitate multiplication of project results regarding improvement of productivity of IL and promotion of STI in the MIL thus contributing towards alleviating poverty and ensuring income and food security. This brings stakeholders together to initiate new co-operations and further adoption of the concepts ensuring project sustainability.
